It’s Flashback Friday again and we’ve got some more old artwork from our vault. First up is Adam’s Classic X-Men and New X-Men. He did these lovely sketches in June of 2002 when he was in his ballpoint stage. He’d decided to work entirely in ballpoint pen, in order to force himself to deal with making mistakes and learning to either anticipate them or work with them. It was helpful, and he even held the notion of doing an entire comic in ballpoint, but eventually came to his senses and returned to pencils.
The picture doesn't hold up all that well, though he was really pleased with the drawings at the time. We still think those New X-Men costumes were the best they'd ever had - particularly considering the poor design that plagues the book today. Simpler is almost always better, and the X-Men always suited the 'uniform' look.
Next up is Comfort’s design project from her Type class in January of 2003. We’ve both got Graphic Design minors, but while Adam mostly played with multimedia, Comfie was primarily a print girl. Comf was always trying to learn as much as she could about many disparate mediums to help her be a better artist. This was a nice idea and taught her a lot, but she found that when she got out of college she had some catching up to do in her beloved comic work. The project that this was for was to write up a short research paper on the person and make it look all farcified without any images, only type. Therefore, to solve this problem Comf made her image out of type using layer masks in Photoshop. She chose to do her piece on designer David Carson. It was a really fun and challenging project for her at the time and still really likes this piece today.
--Today’s Tidbits-- It’s snowing lots outside, so we’ve been stuck indoors all day, mostly inking commissions and getting the last ones we’d finished all set for print. Lucky for us, the prints turned out wonderfully. Thank goodness - there’s nothing worse than busting hump on a nice color piece and having the printer reduce it to poo. We know plenty about prepping pieces for printers, but sometimes there’s just no avoiding the… well, the poopiness. That’s all for today. See you back here tomorrow for Art School- Adam & Comfort
