We’re back with two new pin-ups. We’re doing a lot of Anime conventions this year, since we had so much fun at the few we did last year. In order to show that we aren’t just leeching off their audience and that we are in fact fans of the art-form ourselves, we’re trying to do some more artwork with manga characters. As it happens, we recently became fans of two excellent series - Death Note and Bleach.
Death Note is so very much not what we thought it would be. We were expecting something that was all gothy and emo and whiney, but instead we got a taut detective thriller with a supernatural hook: a guy finds a notebook that causes anyone whose name is written inside to die. He sets out to ‘fix’ the world and end crime with the notebook, and the greatest detective the world has known is tasked with catching and stopping him. As the two match wits, it becomes some of the most exciting detective fiction we’ve ever experienced. It’s very dark, but very worth it.
Here’s Comfort’s ode to the series
(you can see a larger version here):

Bleach is something completely different. As a series, it’s okay - not the best we’ve seen, but far from the worst. And when the action starts, it gets really intense. But what really hooked us were the characters. We love the character design in this series, and something about the people in the story keeps us riveted even when we aren’t as excited by the plot (anybody who’s watched the Bount arc can probably sympathize).

We’ll have these prints at all the shows we’re doing, starting THIS WEEKEND at the
Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2). It’s one of the biggest shows of the year, and possibly the most anticipated (next to the ginormous ComiCon in San Diego). If you’re in the area and looking for a rollicking good time, stop by and say hello - we’re at
Table C6. We’ll be sketching and shucking comics and prints all weekend. Fun!
--Today’s Tidbits--In other news, one of our Fightin’ Flatsmen has started a side-project of his own:
RumbleLand. It’s a pretty original idea; a comic about Professional Wrestling where any reader can submit themselves to become an actual wrestler character in the comic. Go check it out and see what they’re doing - it’s really neat!
Meanwhile, we’re cracking down to finish some last-minute commissions before C2E2, while also working hard at final character designs for our new project. You’ll start seeing sketches here soon, so keep watching. The Rainbow is coming, and we’re your connection. Get it? Cool.
See you in Chicago!
